Quality Control & Testing Standards

Asterism's

hot melt adhesive QC protocol covers raw material batch verification, melt rheology, cured-bond mechanical performance, and thermal stability under footwear service conditions.

Production process control. Raw polymers, tackifying resins, waxes, and antioxidants are weighed by loss-in-weight feeders to ±0.5% of formulation target. The twin-screw extruder melts and compounds the blend at 120–180°C with zone temperature controlled within ±3°C. Melt viscosity is monitored inline by a capillary rheometer, and any batch deviating more than 10% from the specification band is diverted. Pelletized product is cooled on a steel belt, screened for particle size (3–5 mm), and packaged in moisture-barrier bags with desiccant.

Physical and chemical testing (per batch).

  • Melt viscosity - Brookfield viscometer, spindle 27, at application temperature ±1°C, ASTM D3236.
  • Softening point - Ring & Ball apparatus, ASTM E28.
  • Open time and set time - automated hot-melt applicator on standard substrate, timed from bead deposition to loss of tack / to handling strength.
  • Peel strength - 180° peel, 25 mm strip, 300 mm/min, 7-day cure at 23°C / 50% RH, on specified substrate pairs.
  • Lap shear strength - 25.4 mm × 12.7 mm overlap, 1.5 kN/min crosshead, ASTM D1002.
  • Heat resistance - bonded specimen under 0.1 MPa static load, ramp 5°C/min, record failure temperature (SAFT).
  • Cold flexibility - bonded specimen bent over 25 mm mandrel at specified low temperature, no cracking or delamination.
  • Thermal stability - adhesive held at application temperature + 20°C for 72 h, viscosity change ≤ 15%, no charring or skinning.
  • Color - Gardner color scale or spectrophotometer ΔE ≤ 1.0 vs. standard.
  • Moisture content - Karl Fischer titration, ≤ 0.1%.

Regulatory testing. Each formulation is screened by GC-MS for REACH SVHC substances and by ICP-OES for RoHS restricted elements. VOC content is measured by EPA Method 24 (or equivalent), with all grades below 1 g/L. Food-contact and skin-contact grades are additionally tested for extractables per EU 10/2011 and ISO 10993-5 (cytotoxicity) where required. Third-party SGS or Intertek reports are issued on request.

Equipment backing production stability. The plant operates 4 twin-screw extrusion lines (capacity 300–800 kg/h each), 2 continuous steel-belt pastillators, 1 glue-stick extrusion line, 1 hot-melt film cast line, inline capillary rheometers, and a fully equipped adhesive testing lab. This setup supports batch-to-batch viscosity variation below 8% and consistent open-time performance across production runs.

Industrial Application Scenarios

01/

Upper-to-sole cementing. EVA-based hot melts with 25–40% vinyl acetate content and open times of 20–40 seconds are used for bonding leather, synthetic leather, and mesh uppers to EVA, PU, or rubber midsoles and outsoles. Application via roller coater or slot-die nozzle at 130–150°C, followed by 4–6 bar press for 15–20 seconds. Peel strength above 6 N/25 mm is standard after full cure.

02/

Toe puff and heel counter bonding. Fast-setting EVA or polyamide hot melts (open time 5–15 seconds, set time 3–10 seconds) are applied to PP or thermoplastic toe puffs and heel counters before insertion into the upper. The short open time matches automated toe-puff molding machines, and the bond withstands the 90–110°C molding cycle without bleed-through.

03/

Insole and midsole lamination. Polyester (PES) or TPU-based hot melt films (0.05–0.15 mm) are used for laminating EVA or PU foam insoles to fabric top covers, and for bonding midsole foam layers. Heat-press lamination at 110–130°C, 3–5 bar, 10–15 seconds. The film form provides uniform adhesive distribution and zero squeeze-out.

04/

Lining and upper assembly. Low-viscosity EVA hot melts (1,000–3,000 mPa·s) are used for bonding lining fabric to upper quarters, box toe construction, and foxing tape attachment. Spray or bead application via automated shoe assembly robots ensures minimal adhesive weight (1.5–3.0 g per pair) and clean bond lines.

05/

Sports shoe specialized bonding. TPU-based hot melts are specified for bonding TPU structural films, carbon-fiber plates, and high-performance mesh in running and football footwear. TPU hot melts offer superior flexibility, hydrolysis resistance, and bond strength to polar substrates compared to EVA grades.

06/

Cold-climate and heat-resistant service. Low-temperature-flex grades (−30°C) are used for winter boots and outdoor footwear. High-heat-resistance grades (continuous 90–100°C) are specified for footwear sold in tropical markets and for shoes stored in vehicle interiors where cabin temperatures can exceed 70°C.

FAQ

1 8

Q: How do open time and set time affect selection for an automated shoe production line?

A:Open time determines the window between adhesive application and substrate joining; set time determines how quickly the bond reaches handling strength. Lines with automated robotic cementing and immediate pressing use short open-time grades (5–15 s). Lines with manual positioning or multi-station assembly use longer open-time grades (30–60 s). Set time below 10 seconds enables immediate sole attachment and reduces fixture time by 40–50% compared to solvent-based cements.

Q: Which hot melt base polymer is best for bonding specific shoe material combinations?

A:EVA grades are general-purpose for leather, synthetic leather, and EVA foam, offering the lowest cost. Polyamide (PA) grades provide superior heat resistance (up to 100°C) and bond to rubber and PU, suitable for work boots and tropical-market footwear. TPU grades offer the best flexibility and hydrolysis resistance for TPU film, carbon plate, and high-performance mesh bonding in sports shoes. Polyester (PES) film is preferred for foam-to-fabric lamination where uniform coverage is critical.

Q: What is the minimum order and lead time for a custom-formulated hot melt adhesive?

A:Standard stock grades (EVA general-purpose, PA high-heat, TPU flexible) ship in 7–10 days with MOQ 500 kg. Custom formulation (tuned open time, viscosity, or heat resistance) requires 500 g lab sample in 5–7 days, then 1,000 kg minimum production in 15–20 days. Glue sticks and film formats have a 1,000 kg MOQ. For substrate-specific bond testing and formulation recommendation, contact our English-speaking technical engineer Jason Lee directly.
